What changed for 2026 income?
The 2026 tax reform raised the basic deduction to ¥620,000, with an extra ¥420,000 for total income up to ¥4.89 million and ¥50,000 up to ¥6.55 million for 2026–2027, and raised the minimum employment income deduction to ¥690,000 (¥740,000 for salaries up to ¥2.2 million). Income tax now starts only above about ¥1.78 million of salary.
Why is resident tax paid a year later?
Resident tax (about 10%) is worked out from the previous calendar year’s income and taken from pay from June of the following year. It is included here as the resident tax your 2026 salary will create.
